Making resolutions for the next year is a big decision, but keeping them is the challenge. The best way to push yourself toward success is to make New Year’s resolutions as a family. Here are seven ideas for your family resolutions this New Year.

1. Healthy Breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast is an important part of your day. After a good breakfast, your family will have the energy to get through their busy days. Eating early in the day keeps you from getting hungry before lunch and wanting to grab a bad snack like a donut or fast food. Parents can plan on keeping healthier food in the kitchen to help the whole family stick to this goal.

2. Exercise Together

Part of healthy living is giving your body time to exercise. This can be through playing soccer, riding bikes, going on a hike, visiting the pool, running races, and much more. Be sure to do this as a family so that you all hold each other accountable. These activities will help you all to add some fun and exercise into your day.

3. Try Something New

It’s always good to new things. Why not do it as a family? Consider trying out one new thing every month, such as a new recipe, a new movie, a new game, a new hike or trail to walk, or a new activity. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, but it can be a special time that your family spends together doing something different and fun.

4. Relax Without Electronics

With so many TVs, computers, phones, and tablets around, there are a lot of ways that we can spend our time with electronics. Unfortunately, this can make your family members feel isolated and alone.

Make it your goal to break from the computer screen for at least an hour each day. Whether you do this by getting outside and exercising together, or by playing a game or doing chores together, this kind of activity will help to encourage teamwork and happiness in your home.

5. Earlier Bedtime

We are all exposed to lots of germs and sickness every day. A big part of staying healthy is getting enough sleep. Make an agreement in your family about when bedtime is and don’t stay up past this decided time. Whether it’s bedtime at 8:00 or 11:30 p.m., set a routine so that you are sure that you and your family sleep enough every night.

6. Healthy Snacks

It is actually very good for your body to eat a snack between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner, as long as it’s small and a healthy option. There are a lot of snacks today that are easy to eat, but not very good for you. By keeping healthier snack foods such as fresh fruits, granola bars, and vegetables available at home and at work you can all work toward eating healthy during all hours of the day.

7. Volunteer Time

You may be a very busy family with lots of activities and chores, but it is always good to give to others. It can be money, food, or clothing, or even just giving your time to those in need. There are many great organizations that need volunteers to make projects happen. You and your family can resolve to work together this year to benefit your community and help those in need.
