Community Health Center of Snohomish County participates in many outreach activities throughout Snohomish County. These are targeted to reach members of our community facing the greatest barriers to obtaining quality health care. Some of our key efforts include the following:
Women & Children's Shelter at Everett Gospel Mission
The women and children's shelter provides emergency and transitional housing for single women and women with children. CHC conducts health visits at the shelter one day a week to provide preventive care, such as immunizations, as well as treat more complex needs such as asthma and diabetes. These families, many of whom have no health insurance or transportation, are often left with few options other than the emergency room for even basic health needs.
Kids' Clinic at Tomorrow's Hope Day Care
Housing Hope provides a combination of emergency and transitional housing, permanent rental, and self-help home ownership. Tomorrow's Hope is an on-site childcare facility for parents who are participating in the program. Keeping children healthy as parents work to become employed and self-sufficient contributes tremendously to their ability to succeed.
Cocoon House Teen Drop In & Residential Centers
Cocoon House is Snohomish County's only resource exclusively serving homeless and runaway youth ages 13 to 17. These children often have complex and challenging needs, and do not have easy access to the most basic health care. The regular visits done by CHC provide an opportunity for not only preventive care and treatment, but also an opportunity to provide education on topics such as nutrition, substance abuse and family planning.
By working closely with area hospitals, we are able to reach out to new parents who are uninsured or do not have a medical home for their new baby. In addition to providing basic supplies and education on infant care, we also help them establish care at CHC, schedule their baby's first checkup, and help see if they are qualified for any available insurance programs.
Project Homeless Connect
Each year in early summer, Community Health Center joins dozens of organizations to provide a whole day of service to the homeless people in our community. The event is held at a local school and participants receive a hot meal, shoes, haircuts, pet care, backpacks filled with toiletries, eye exams and eye glasses, portait photos of their families and much more. CHC-Sno sets up a remote medical clinic to provide health care and, in a separate area, we collaborate with others to provide dental care and denture repair in dental vans on the site. The event in 2013 was attended by 1200 people!
Russian Community Outreach
Russian and Ukrainian people form the backbone of many neighborhoods in Snohomish County. After Spanish, these are the most common languages spoken by our patients. Our staff outreach worker/interpreter serves Russian/Ukrainian people of all ages from newborns to great-grandparents helping them understand preventive care, oral health, chronic care and health care reform.
